Kilchoman 100% Islay 6th Edition Is a Farm Distillery Product

In the landscape of smaller Scottish distilleries, it is hard not to be impressed with the likes of Islay-based Kilchoman. The farm distillery continues to produce quality bottling after quality bottling, many of which are quickly snapped up after release. Chief among these is the yearly 100% Islay expression, made from barley grown in fields adjacent to the stills.

The just-announced Kilchoman 100% Islay 6th Edition continues this trend for 2016, and it is the oldest expression to date released under this label. The distillery describes it as “a vatting of fresh and refill ex Buffalo Trace Bourbon barrels filled in 2010 and bottled in 2016.” It, like previous 100% Islay whiskies, has a lighter peating level compared to the rest of the Kilchoman range, “creating a uniquely fresh and distinct style of Islay single malt.”

“We expect Kilchoman fans will enjoy the 6th Edition,” said Anthony Wills, Kilchoman Founder and Managing Director, in a statement. “The 100% Islay expressions have come along significantly in recent years, [and] sourcing our bourbon barrels from one US producer has a significant impact on the quality of the whisky at what is a relatively young age.”

Kilchoman 100% Islay 6th Edition, bottled at 50% ABV, will be made available starting in mid-May for around £72, or about $105 USD.

For the curious, Kilchoman recently posted an interesting blog entry in which they talked a little bit about their on-site farm. They reveal how barley planting can be delayed due to the presence of geese that overwinter on Islay, since geese not only eat the shoots and seeds, but also create swampy mud puddles in the middle of their fields. They also discuss the considerable financial risks of growing their own barley, risks that are tempered by their pride in the whisky created as a result.
