Aberfeldy 16 Year Old The Latest Last Great Malts Of Scotland

Aberfeldy 16 Year OldScotland’s John Dewar & Sons, continuing the slow trickle of new releases tied to its Last Great Malts of Scotland initiative we first profiled over a year ago, recently debuted a new single malt from the Aberfeldy distillery. This facility, located in the Highland region, was first founded back in 1898 by the Dewar family themselves, and uses the Pitilie Burn, a river which runs alongside it, as its water source.

The new Aberfeldy 16 Year Old whisky was entirely finished in Oloroso sherry casks, according to the distillery, resulting in a bottling with a “more pronounced sherry accent to the malt.” It heralds from a house style that’s described as “rich but smooth and accessible with an emphasis on notes of honey.” Part of how it gets to this level is through a “long fermentation time of 70 hours [that] allows for greater flavor development as an extended fermentation encourages the creation of more esters which in turn give the whisky fruitiness.”

Bottled at 40% ABV, the Scotch is priced at £62 (around $95 USD) and is available in a variety of international markets, including Belgium, Canada, Germany, France, Japan, Lebanon, Netherlands, Russia, Sweden, Taiwan and the UK. Limited official tasting notes for it are below and, should you want a bottle, here’s a list of retailers who may have it for shipment.

It is described as rewardingly viscous and sweet; full of fresh fruit and buttery notes.
