Copperworks American Single Malt Whiskey Ready For Debut

Copperworks American Single Malt WhiskeyWhen considering the state of American single malt whiskies coming from Washington, Westland immediately springs to mind. They pretty well dominate the Seattle scene for single malt, but they’ll soon have some new competition in their own backyard, courtesy of Copperworks Distilling and their new Copperworks American Single Malt Whiskey.

Copperworks American Single Malt Whiskey, according to the distillery, is a spirit which has been something of a spiritual journey for them since the founders Jason Parker and Micah Nutt first discussed the idea over a beer some six years ago. Pursuing that dream has been a labor of love and patience, starting with ordering special copper pot stills which took a year and half to be handmade in Scotland.

The new make which was eventually produced from these stills was double distilled from 100% pale malted barley, and then aged in new, full size American oak barrels made for Copperworks in Kentucky (you can see a lot more on the technical details of it at their website). Release 001, which is coming to market August 27 via the distillery’s tasting room in Seattle, was matured in these barrels for 30 months, and is now set to go.

Plans by Copperworks call for Release 001, bottled at 104 proof, to have a limited run of just 1,005 bottles, all hand-labeled and signed by the distillers. With the release date fast approaching, the distillery said recently there are still bottles available for those who want to get hold of one at the nearly $60 price tag.

The process for acquiring Copperworks American Single Malt Whiskey on release day goes something like this: for every $75 you spend to buy a gift card from them, you get a special “Golden Ticket.” These tickets then reserve you the chance to get a bottle which, of course, you still have to pay for separately, though you can apparently put the gift card towards purchase of the whiskey as well. Why they are doing it this way is a bit of a mystery, but I guess whatever works to help them build buzz around the upcoming release.

Now, normally when a craft whiskey gets a regional release, you are pretty much SOL if you aren’t in the area when it gets to the tasting room. Not the case with this, however, as Copperworks will actually ship their whiskey to out-of-towners. There are limitations on where it can be shipped, however, so make sure to read where this is allowed before you pony up for a bottle or three.

In terms of tasting notes, here are some official ones from Copperworks. We will likely grab a bottle from their initial release to review, so watch for that here soon.

Our first whiskey release has a soft honey and black tea aroma, smooth mouthfeel, and flavors of smoked orange and toffee, giving way to black pepper and leather. Bottled at 104 proof, it is delicious sipped neat and used in classic and modern whiskey cocktails.
