Michter’s 2016 US*1 Barrel Strength Rye Is Up To 114.8 Proof

Michter's 2016 US*1 Barrel Strength RyeMichter’s out of Kentucky is known for having some well regarded, sourced bourbon and rye whiskies. This includes bottlings which come in at barrel strength, such as the just released Michter’s 2016 US*1 Barrel Strength Rye that is limited edition and pricing around $75.

The US*1 Barrel Strength Rye, much like last year’s release, went into the barrel at 103 proof. After aging, said distillery officials, barrel proof for the majority of barrels of this second release bottled so far has fallen between 110.2 proof and 114.8 proof. This is up from the 2015 version, which ran between 108 and to 110.8 proof.

“To enter the distillate for our US*1 Rye and our US*1 Bourbon into the barrel at 103 proof instead of a higher, more industry standard proof is very expensive, but our goal at Michter’s is to produce the greatest whiskey possible, regardless of the cost,” said Michter’s President, Joseph J. Magliocco, in a statement.

Described as a single barrel bottling by Michter’s, there’s no specific age statement for the US*1 Barrel Strength Rye. It was aged in fir-charred, new American white barrels. Limited tasting notes for the 2015 version of this whiskey are below for your consideration.

Butterscotch and cinnamon with a hint of cherries on the nose; warming, rich, toasty vanilla and caramel up front with a dry oaky spice on the finish.

Besides this particular expression Michter’s is also known for its single barrel rye, small batch American whiskey, sour mash whiskey, single barrel bourbon, and small batch bourbon.
