St. Louis-based Luxco, a non distilling producer behind sourced whiskey brands such as Blood Oath and Rebel Yell, aims to get into the whiskey distilling business as it tries to meet what is says is an increasing demand for the brown spirit. To this end, it has revealed more detailed plans for its own distillery in Bardstown, Kentucky, joining the already under construction Bardstown Bourbon Company in bringing new whiskey making to the area.
The as yet unnamed distillery, Luxco said, will be built on a 70 acre site off a local state highway. Construction, which will begin this summer, will ultimately produce by late next year an 18,000 square foot distilling facility, six barrel warehouses, a tasting room and event space. On top of all of this it will be built adjacent to a National Historic Place home, which will remain on the property.
To build the distillery, Luxco has been offered some rather nice incentives from local and state officials, including a preliminary approval from the Kentucky Economic Development Finance Authority for $1.3 million in tax incentives. The Joint City-County Planning Commission. meanwhile, approved rezoning of the land for the project.
“We are looking forward to building the distillery on this scenic property and in such a central location in Bardstown,” said David Bratcher, President and COO of Luxco, in a statement. “We intend the distillery to be a welcoming stop for those visiting the Kentucky Bourbon Trail and we are excited to bring our bourbon experience and brands to Nelson County.”
“Building this distillery will allow us to control our own production as well as offer us the ability to experiment with new and innovative mash bills, barrel types and aging techniques.”
Luxco, which will employ an estimated 34 people at its new distillery, has already dipped its toes into production. It owns 50 percent interest in the Limestone Branch Distillery in Lebanon, Kentucky, which produces Yellowstone Kentucky Straight Bourbon.
