Rattleback Rye Latest Rapid Age Whiskey to Market

Rattleback RyeAnd so it begins – again – another whiskey born of the rapid aging technology from California-based Lost Spirits has broken cover. Started up by a pair of Los Angeles-area entrepreneurs, the new Rattleback Rye is set to drop into stores perhaps as early as next month.

Rattleback Rye, as profiled in LA Weekly a few days back, is a “flash-aged” whiskey created by Théron Regnier and Wynn Sanders. The two, working with one of Lost Spirits’ “THEA One” reactors that’s housed at an Oregon distillery, have done the “research and development of their new rye.”

Here’s more on what Regnier and Sanders have to say about their new whiskey from the Rattleback website:

Rattleback was created for those who seek inspiration in a glass. Regnier and Sanders vision for this new type of whiskey came from the recent resurgence of whiskey drinkers, with both men and women, as well as the growing interest of rye cocktails among mixologisists and bartenders.

Rattleback is a revolution, aligning traditional whiskey notes and flavors with modern distilling innovation to create spirits as rich and varied as the people who enjoy them.

Interesting? I’m not so sure. As we have written about before, we question the quality of rapid aged whiskey against traditionally aged products. How will it taste? Will the 95% rye and 5% barley mash bill reflect what you typically expect from these grain types in combination?

All that’s known about the taste profile of Rattleback at this point is spelled out in official tasting notes, which I’ve put below for your consideration. The whiskey, when it is released, will clock in at 100 proof and reportedly be something best enjoyed in a typical whiskey drinking fashion (neat, on the rocks or a cocktail mixer).

With a polished mahogany color, and a nose reminiscent of fruit cake and orange peel, it is slightly herbal with a hint of saffron. The palate is quite viscous with an oily texture and notes of candied fruits and toasted marshmallows. Rattleback Rye finishes with exceptionally long taste of spices, coffee, creamy toffee, and a hint of licorice.
