Macallan Rare Cask Black Said To Be A Smoky Scotch

Macallan Rare Cask BlackA little over a year ago, Scotland’s Macallan distillery unveiled Rare Cask, a non-age statement Scotch that’s part of the upper end 1824 Masters Series. It was drawn from handpicked Spanish oak sherry-seasoned casks and has been pretty well received in the market, despite its high price tag. Now, a step up of sorts is happening for this whisky in the form of Rare Cask Black, which is best described as a more smoky version of its less expensive sibling.

Macallan Rare Cask Black, being released only to global travel retail in small numbers, was sourced from less than 100 unique casks the distillery had been maturing. A mix of 100% sherry-seasoned European and American oak casks, it is said that “due to the number of cask types involved and the length of time taken to identify them, it has taken longer to create Rare Cask Black than any other expression of The Macallan.”

“Rare Cask Black tells a different story about our spirit and casks, but more than that it tells a story of rarity,” said Bob Dalgarno, Macallan Master Whisky Maker, in a statement. “Smoky Macallan is rare, there is very little in existence and once used these casks will be no more. This is a whisky which is out of character for The Macallan due to the subtle seam of smoke on the palate, but it still bears the essential Macallan DNA.”

The whisky has been bottled at 45% ABV and is non-chill filtered. It is also pricing around $450 USD. Official tasting notes from Macallan are below for you consideration.

Nose: Intense flavour from a timeless thread of peat smoke. A beautiful combination of dried fruits, nutmeg, ginger and beautifully polished oak plus dates, figs and raisins, heavy but sweet. Non chill filtered for a fuller flavor.

Palate: A dry smokiness reveals itself yielding to softer oak tones.

Finish: Long and fruity with an elegant wood smoke.
