California Distillery Finishes Sourced Irish Whiskey In Sherry Casks

mosswood-irishIt’s been awhile since I heard much on Mosswood Distillers, a tiny San Francisco Bay Area whiskey distillery known for finishing the whiskey of others in different types of unique barrels. Its latest expression seems to continue this trend in the form of an Irish whiskey which saw time in ex-sherry casks.

The new Mosswood Sherry Barrel Aged Irish Whiskey is described as a four-year old Irish whiskey that was distilled at Cooley in Ireland. That they went with an overseas whiskey is rather unique among American distillers, especially small ones, since most of the time when sourcing happens what’s being used is Canadian or American brown spirit.

The Irish whiskey was finished ” in a barrel treated with Amontillado Sherry for about a year.” The resulting juice, bottled at 46% ABV, is said to have picked up “a dry, nutty characteristic” from the barrel finishing, with resulting “notes of marzipan, cinnamon and cardamom, and a rich, creamy texture.” Yum!

Should you want to try this, there are a couple of online retailers in California carrying it right now for between $55 and $60 per 750 ml bottle.
