Next WhistlePig Old World Whiskey, Finished In Madeira Casks, Debuts

WhistlePig, picking up from just a month ago when they unveiled the first limited edition whiskey from  their highly sought after Old World Series, today announced the second release in this line up. Joining the previously released Sauternes Finish offering is the new Madeira Finish.

The WhistlePig Old World Series: Madeira Finish, according to the whiskey label, is the first American rye aged in ex-Madeira casks. Like the Sauternes release, this newer expression doesn’t make use of whiskey distilled specifically from WhistlePig, but instead is a 12-year-old rye with a 95% rye and 5% malted barley mash bill that was sourced from MGP Distillery in Lawrenceburg, Indiana.

Madeira, for those unfamiliar with it, is a fortified Portuguese wine. WhistlePig’s master distiller Dave Pickerell and his team made use of some barrels which formerly housed this wine to finish the aging process of the rye, resulting in a whiskey that was bottled at 90 proof. It is already at retail, pricing between $100 and $150 a bottle depending upon who you buy it from. Official tasting notes are below.

Nose: Peach, spearmint, caramel, oak
Flavor: Peppercorn, licorice, black cherry, mint, and chocolate.
Finish: Clover, grapefruit, toffee, and oak.
