WhistlePig 2014 Limited Boss Hog Rye Whiskey Bottling Aims To Make You Squeal In Delight

WhistlePig-Spirit-of-MortimerWhistlePig is a brand of American-marketed whiskey mostly everyone, myself included, seems to love despite the fact it comes from Canada. This will change in time as the Vermont-based operation aims to eventually produce its own rye offerings. For now though among its more popular whiskies drawn from stock up north is the yearly Boss Hog bottling, of which for 2014 it is nicknamed The Spirit of Mortimer.

The Boss Hogg: The Spirit of Mortimer release is described by WhistlePig as a top shelf, 100 percent rye whiskey that was barreled at cask strength, meaning it clocks in at a hefty 124 proof maximum. It is a 13.5 year old expression, drawn from roughly 50 of the distillery’s oldest Canadian whiskey barrels known as Bond 77. What’s now in bottle went through a so-called “quadruple barrel aging process,” in which it spent time “in a combination of new American oak, and early use bourbon barrels.”

This new release is named Spirit of Mortimer because, as WhistlePig folklore goes, It was dedicated to their “dearly departed mascot, a Kune Kune heritage-breed pig named Mortimer.” Each bottle in this offering is thus “sealed with a custom, hand-crafted Danforth Pewter top, depicting its winged namesake in flight.”

Pricing for the new WhistlePig is around $190 for a 750ml bottle. As for tasting notes, it is said by the distiller Dave Pickerell to

maintain WhistlePig’s familiar deep amber colour and rich notes of caramel, vanilla and oak, with undertones of mint and winter fruit, making for a warm, bold taste.
