New Glen Garioch Whisky Aged Patiently In Former Bordeaux Barrels

The Glen Garioch distillery, owned by Morrison Brothers Distillers and located in the Scottish Highlands region of Aberdeenshire, is one of the oldest in Scotland. Dating back to 1797 for its founding, and recently relaunched in 2010, it sits in a sheltered valley it takes its name from. It is not a high volume operation, which reflects in a limited bottle run of a just released 1998 vintage fully matured in red wine casks.

The Wine Cask Matured Glen Garioch 1998, according to the distillery, was distilled entirely in June of its namesake year and placed in former Bordeaux barrels from Saint-Julien for over 15 years. This is said to have added “a touch of elegance to the rich, fruity, spicy Highland character that is Glen Garioch’s house style.”

Pricing for around $170 a bottle and bottled at an ABV of 48%, the over 5,000 bottles of this non-chill filtered release are available globally until stocks run dry. Tasting notes from Glen Garioch are below.

Wine Cask Matured Glen Garioch 1998

Burnished copper in colour, the Wine Cask Matured Glen Garioch reveals brambles, wild blueberries and plums on the nose, bursting from the glass with hints of chocolate, demerara sugar. In structure and complexity, layers of chocolate malt, autumn fruits and ginger marmalade meld on the tongue, leading to a sweet honey and spicy finish.
