Bowmore 50-Year-Old Whisky Will Pleasure Your Hedonistic Scotch Needs

Let’s say, for argument’s sake, that you just won the jackpot of a lifetime in the lottery. You’ve paid off your debts, given to charity and paid your taxes. What do you now do for the hedonistic side of yourself? Maybe pick up a rare bottle of Scotch for nearly $27,000? Now we are talking, and now you own a bottle of Bowmore 50-year-old.

The Bowmore distillery, back late last year, announced it was releasing 200 bottles total over the next several years of a single malt whisky that was “distilled one very cold day in December 1961” and then placed into two ex-bourbon hogshead casks. Fast forward 50 years and get to bottling, and what you have left is just enough spirit to offer 50 decanters at a time through 2016 to those ultimate Scotch collectors out there.

Tasting notes from the distillery for this grand old offering indicate a Scotch who’s “hints of black truffles and tropical fruits reveal the full maturity of Bowmore’s warm, smoky spirit. With a warm, honey gold texture, the bursts of ripe fruit intermingled with black truffles and gentle smoke manifest themselves in that first sip, leaving you to savour the evolving finish of almond cake and caramelised pears interwoven with subtle peat oils.”

This 50-year-old, like the $11,000, 40-year-old Bora I wrote about earlier this month, comes in very unique packaging. Each bottle of it is said by Bowmore to be “hand-blown by renowned glass sculpting studio Glasstorm, while the neck collars and cork tops of the bottles have been beautifully made by Fattorini Silversmiths. To complete the piece, the bottle will be housed within handmade cabinets which have been crafted in Scottish Elmwood by master carpenter Peter Toaig.”
