Jefferson 30, 25 Year Old Bourbons Are Old Timers Indeed

jefferson-25Are 25- and 30-year-old bourbons like mythical unicorns? Not necessarily, though they are extremely rare. One who has some stock to share is Castle Brands, which under its Jefferson’s Bourbon label has recently introduced two such aged offerings in small batches.

Founded by Trey Zoeller in 1997, Jefferson’s Bourbon makes its living by purchasing aged bourbon in barrels and then allowing it to mature even further before marrying it for bottling. The Jefferson line is pretty extensive, starting with the Reserve spirit and then expanding to include Jefferson’s Bourbon, Jefferson’s Presidential Select, Jefferson’s Rye, Jefferson’s Ocean and Jefferson’s Chef’s Collaboration.

The Presidential Select 25 and 30 Year Old Straight Bourbon Whiskey releases, which price for around $200 and $250 respectively, were both aged in new oak and bottled at 94 proof. Tasting notes from those behind them indicate that the 25 year old “has an amber to burnt orange hue with scents of caramel, maple and toffee. On the palate, upfront notes of soft honey and vanilla are followed by a rich, buttery mouth feel finishing with spice and leather.”

In contrast, the 30 year old “has a deep dark color with thick legs and rich scents of vanilla and butterscotch. It is surprisingly refreshing on the palate offering first a mix of sweet and spicy followed by caramel and finishing with notes of blackberry.”
